Will The Oven Explode? by Andaleeb Wajid

Time to read this review:

3–4 minutes

Do you follow this practice of figuring out what the plot of the story could be by just looking at the title of the book, and not flipping the book over to read the blurb?

I do. From the cover (an amateurish looking one, though) you could get hints about the plot: there’s going to be some aspect of cooking, YouTube and social media. However, I couldn’t glean from the title of this book that it would turn out to be a perfect explosion of fun, romance, humour, jealousy pangs, homegrown family drama and delicious foodie moments. And yes, the heroine of this book actually managed to explode an oven! Read the book if you don’t believe me 😀

The plot of the book goes like this: Ayn is a super popular food vlogger and blogger. Ehan is her loving, doting husband. They share a brilliant chemistry. But then something goes wrong in paradise, and Ehan walks out on Ayn, leaving her confused. Why did Ehan feel the need to pack his bags and leave from a ‘perfect’ marriage?

The thing is, you see, Ayn was the only person out of the two who believed that their marriage was a bliss. Ehan no longer felt loved, the way he used to when they were newly weds. Why so? Because of Ayn’s popularity in social media circles. In between the rush of getting the perfect click of a steaming hot plate of chicken tikka to bustling around the kitchen trying to document a recipe for YouTube, Ayn stopped spending quality time with Ehan, and didn’t even realise that she was doing so.

Do Ayn and Ehan part ways forever, their differences irreconcilable, or do they join together once again, all differences forgotten?

Now before you say, “Mithila, this is supposed to be a romance book. The hero and the heroine have to patch up in the end. There’s no other option.”, let me introduce to you the mischief-makers of this book. The ones who have their own agendas, and also the ones who want to help Ayn / Ehan in their own ways!

First in, Ehan’s sister Sabeen. A vamp from hell, she never approved of Ehan’s marriage with Ayn.

Then, Sabeen’s sister-in-law, Tara. Tara was Ehan’s ex-fiancee, the ex-fiancee who was dumped by Ehan in favour of Ayn.

Next up, Keertana, Ayn’s bestie. Keertana is trying desperately hard to play peacemaker and ensure that Ayn and Ehan sort out their differences as fast as possible.

Assorted characters of Mrs. Joshi, the neighbour, and Shanti, the household add a pinch of Indian nosiness to this biryani of a story!

What I loved about this book is that it’s a perfect romcom, chicklit read. You feel like laughing at all the crazy situations in the book. At times, these crazy situations are caused because the characters don’t have complete knowledge of a particular situation (and we readers do, thanks to the skills of the author!). The whole drama element of the story made sure that the story didn’t seem predictable at all.

Also, the characters of Sabeen and Tara and their scheming ways will leave you rolling on the floor.

I loved the way the author made the characters come alive, and made sure that the reader thoroughly rooted for Ayn and Ehan to get back together!

I give this book a 3.75/5 stars. It’s a must read if you love reading Indian romance-comedy fiction, and if you’re looking for a fun read.

Sounds like a light rom-com.. Sometime even if a plot becomes predictable I dont reading it purely for the fun element .
